Okanagan Nation Traditional Territory
Traditionally, Okanagans occupied an area which extended over approximately 69
000 square kilometers. The northern area of this territory was close to the area
of Mica Creek, just north of modern day Revelstoke, BC, and the eastern boundary
was between Kaslo and Kootenay Lakes. The southern boundary extended to the vicinity
of Wilbur, Washington and the western border extended into the Nicola Valley. Today,
the Okanagan Nation in Canada is made up of seven bands: the Okanagan Indian Band,
Upper Nicola Indian Band, Westbank First Nation, Penticton Indian Band, Lower Similkameen
Indian Band, Upper Similkameen Indian Band and Osoyoos Indian Band, and the bands
in modern day Washington State are administered by the tribal government of the
Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation.
