The ‘Collaborative Process’ Forum focused on the implementation of Bill S-3, which removes the 1951 ‘Cut-Off’ (Paragraph 6.1.a) from the Indian Act. The 1951 ‘Cut Off’ excluded First Nations, including Syilx Okanagan, grandchildren born before 1951, whose grandmother lost her status due to marrying a non-Indian, from attaining Indian Registration, Band Membership and First Nations Citizenship.
First Nations are now to be consulted on how best to perform these amendments to the Act, to identify what resources are required to ensure successful implementation and to ensure that any unintended consequences are lessened. Previous sessions have been held throughout the Okanagan Nation, including including a Nation Forum and a Nation Think Tank, but we recognize that not all members were able to attend these events in person.
This form is provides all Okanagan Nation members an opportunity to submit input into the Nation Forum: Collaborative Process on Indian Registration, Band Membership and First Nations Citizenship.
Okanagan Nation Members, please provide input through an online questionnaire. Input will be received until March 15, 2019.
