kłtql̓tikn: Mountain Top Series

Our journey of reclaiming who we are as Okanagan has taken us over many roads (Unity Run), down many waterways (Canoe Trek), and now it will take us to the kłtql̓tikn (mountain tops). BRIDGES: Stories From the Land will be honouring these places by bringing youth to camp, hike, and learn in parts of our territory that long for them.   Throughout the BRIDGES Journey we have consistently heard from our youth that they want to re-connect with their lands – they are ready!

Acknowledging that in today’s reality, many barriers may exist, that prevent us from getting to know our land the way we want to. This series acknowledges that reality by striving to remove them: transportation, coordination, child care, mentors, teachers, gear, etc – are all part of this series. This series will do everything it can to remove challenges in order to make this program happen in the best way possible – for our youth.

A few things you will experience throughout the series:

  • Connect with new parts of your territory
  • Outdoor Camping and Survival skills
  • Teachings on the land
  • Plants and medicines
  • Protocols
  • Creative self-expression
  • Building relationships

N̓ʕay̓ʕáy̓l̓s: Courageous

This series is set up as a progression – we will begin with shorter, closer to home camps and work our way up to a full week on the land! Just like learning a new language, strengthening our relationship to the land is best done through an extended immersion experience. While on these trips, youth are encouraged to accept new challenges, express themselves, support one another, and participate as a team. The kłtql̓tikn series will continue to build self-esteem and confidence supporting our youth to find their own unique thread to bind and unify with their history, their now, and their future.

WHO is leading these camps? IndigenEYEZ facilitators who have been trained in outdoor education, and survival skills will be co-leading this series. Community mentors, teachers, and support people will also co-lead along with IndigenEYEZ faclilitators. Our team will teach youth how to thrive in nature and away from the comforts of home; tools such as hiking safely, overnight backpacking, zero trace camping, and learning about the local ecology will be shared.

WHAT do I need?

NOTHING! All Meals, gear, and equipment will be provided
