“snaqsilx refers to all syilx people and their connection to one another, to their land, and all living things”.
ONA’s BRIDGES and the Okanagan Pre-Employment Support team are co-hosting a joint gathering that will bring youth and front line workers (social, education, employment, HR, Syilx organizations and industry) together for a 2 day event meant to connect youth with the various programs that can holistically support them in pursuing their educational and employment dreams.
The two-day event will include:
Day 1 – Youth Forum
This will be a dynamic and interactive day that will include engaging workshops, interactive panel discussions, cultural activities, inspirational Okanagan youth speakers, resource presentations and display tables for each band, organization and industry that want to connect with youth. The day will end with a banquet that brings youth, leaders and front line workers together to hear an inspirational youth speaker. (TBD) Included will be an employment/education center where youth can meet with employment counsellors and explore job/career and educational/training opportunities.
Day 2 – Front Line Workers (youth invited to attend)
This day will be a combination of information sharing about the various programs available to youth, and a dialogue about the different resource materials and tools used for training, employment and career/job assessments. This day will also include a café style workshop that challenges each organization and band staff/department to share their forms that they use for intake, assessment, file/case management and referral systems. The key task of this day is to explore the commonalities of each form and process, and identify how these may be integrated into shared Okanagan resources which will limit the duplication of paperwork and decrease the frustration of youth. The final activity of this day is to create and celebrate a shared vision statement of how we are committed to engaging with youth.
