The 4th Syilx (Okanagan) Water Forum: Connecting to the Land, taking place on World Water Day, Thursday, March 22nd. This is a follow up from Forward Thinking: Syilx Knowledge Informing Watershed Planning Forum’s major commitments of the need to gather out on the land, asserting our responsibility for siwɬkʷ and “collaboration, higher consciousness, being open to opportunities”.
Registration is free for Syilx community and $150 for all other participants.
The Okanagan Nation Alliance (ONA) is hosting this experiential event for Syilx citizens, knowledge holders, other governments, and water colleagues and leaders. This Forum will provide an opportunity to learn, connect with each other out on the land, share perspectives, build a collective water consciousness, and engage in dialogue on drinking water protection, wetlands, and other important issues.
The day will start with a Syilx Water Ceremony on nx̌ʷaqʷaʔstn (Mission Creek). Attendees will then tour the watershed with Syilx elder’s and knowledge holders who will share place names, protocols, and the Syilx natural laws regarding ukʷnakinx (Okanagan) watershed. Other stops on the tour will include the kł cp̓əlk̓ stim̓ Hatchery, Penticton Oxbows Restoration site, and significant Syilx siwɬkʷ (water) places. We will also be joined by drinking water protection and wetlands restoration experts. A Syilx catered hot lunch will be also provided at the En’owkin Centre in Penticton.
